Baseline Reuse

Assess what can be reused before deciding what to build from scratch

Apply the team's accumulated assets to new tasks instead of repeatedly adding person-months.

Answer

What we provide

After requirements clarification, New Horizon assesses baseline reuse against model libraries, scene templates, and toolchains, identifying the reusable proportion, new work required, and a recommended schedule. This is the mechanism behind the aspiration of approximately 10% of the budget and 30% of the time.

Path

How it works

  1. 01 Check against the asset library
  2. 02 Identify gaps
  3. 03 Recommend a project slice
  4. 04 Incorporate into the plan

Engineering Notes

Reuse assessment must include adaptation and revalidation costs

01

Inventory available assets

Check the functions, versions, licenses, and validated scope of existing models, components, and tools individually. Similar names do not establish suitability for a new project.

02

Estimate actual effort

Estimate direct reuse, interface adaptation, parameter recalibration, and new development separately, allowing effort for regression verification and documentation updates.

03

Establish evidence

Validate reuse candidates with minimal cases, recording passed checks and gaps. Reuse percentages should map to an asset inventory, rather than serve as unsupported promotional figures.

04

Check References, Not Just Files

Before reusing a model library, check common types, interface versions, and element identifiers. Use an independent sample to verify reference resolution, local edits, and project reopening, documenting dependencies that need replacement. Consider reusing prior verification results only when inputs and applicability still match.
