How should metrics be agreed for satellite coverage and remote sensing mission simulations?

Last updated: · New Horizon Digital Outsourcing Team

Coverage analysis should specify the target area, time window, observation constraints, and statistical definitions. Geometric visibility does not guarantee usable imagery: illumination, attitude, payload modes, data storage, and downlink conditions may also matter. State in advance whether these constraints are included in the model.

Prepare spatial, temporal, and payload inputs

  • Confirm the source and validity period of orbital data, coordinate frames, time standards, and target-area boundaries. Payload fields of view, observation angles, and attitude constraints should come from material you are permitted to use. Illustrative parameters may support teaching, but must not be presented as a specific satellite's actual mission capability.

How should revisit and coverage be defined?

  • State whether revisit means any geometric opportunity or a usable opportunity meeting all conditions, and whether coverage measures area or target count. Different definitions can produce different results for the same scenario. Fix the algorithms and statistical windows before comparing options.

How should engineering constraints be handled?

  • Begin with geometric analysis, then add illumination, maneuvering, and resource limits individually, recording which opportunities each constraint removes. If mission planning is required, also check activity conflicts and whether data can be processed or downlinked in time. Do not conceal every limitation within an unexplained score.

How should results be accepted?

  • Deliver scenarios, data sources, time configurations, opportunity lists, and statistical scripts. Sample several time points to check coordinates and visibility, and compare results with another calculation method. Reports should distinguish geometric opportunities, planned tasks, and observations actually completed.
