How do you reuse, version, and deliver MBSE model libraries?

Last updated: · New Horizon Digital Outsourcing Team

Model reuse should rely on controlled components and explicit dependencies, rather than copying projects and renaming everything. Define the interfaces, parameters, and applicability of reusable elements first, then decide which elements reference shared libraries and which are maintained within each project.

What belongs in a shared model library?

  • Stable unit definitions, common interfaces, reviewed components, and modeling patterns are suitable for reuse. Customer-specific organizational relationships, unverified parameters, and confidential requirements should not go directly into a shared library. Record each component's source, owner, dependencies, and usage restrictions to prevent unsuitable assumptions from being inherited.

How do library versions map to project baselines?

  • Record the exact versions of referenced libraries when freezing a project. Before upgrading a library, compare interface, constraint, and behavior changes in a copy, then decide whether to migrate. Simply stating that the latest version is used does not support reproducibility, and a supplier's tool upgrade must not overwrite an accepted project.

What needs to be addressed in collaborative modeling?

  • Assign editing responsibility by model package or object boundary, and agree on naming, review, and merge procedures. Review diagram layout changes separately from semantic changes where possible. After resolving conflicts, check for broken object references; successfully opening the project alone is not sufficient evidence that a merge is complete.

How can reusability be demonstrated at handover?

  • Import the library into a clean environment and create a minimal instance to verify dependencies, licensing, and parameter changes. Deliver the library package, version list, examples, and known limitations. The value of reuse lies in maintainability of subsequent projects, and should not be measured solely by the number of diagrams saved.
