How can digital twins support historical replay and incident analysis?

Last updated: · New Horizon Digital Outsourcing Team

Historical playback requires records of states, events, and versions, rather than screen recordings alone. Explaining an anomaly requires the model, configuration, and data timeline in use at that time. Video can show what happened but cannot replace queryable operational records.

Which data should be retained?

  • Select key object states, commands, responses, alarms, and connection events, and define sampling and retention policies. Store high-frequency raw data separately from business summaries so exhaustive recording does not impair the live system. Handle personal or customer information according to permissions and agreements.

Ensure the timeline can be reconstructed

  • Consistently record acquisition times, reception times, and event identifiers, preserving out-of-order arrivals. Explicitly indicate interpolation, missing data, and downsampling during playback; generated intermediate frames are not original measurements. If clocks across devices are unsynchronized, explain the resulting uncertainty in the analysis.

Match scene versions to data versions

  • Retain references to asset, coordinate-calibration, protocol, and software versions. Replaying old logs with a modified model can produce different positions or meanings, so fix the playback baseline. For external services that cannot be preserved, record the necessary inputs and outputs from that time.

How should incident-reconstruction capability be accepted?

  • Select a log segment from a known event and have the recipient reconstruct the scene and locate states before and after it. Check pause, seek, playback-speed controls, and missing-data indicators, and verify that playback operations cannot reach real equipment. Deliver search instructions, sample logs, and retention boundaries.
