How can a lunar exploration digital twin balance visual quality and physical credibility?

Last updated: · New Horizon Digital Outsourcing Team

Lunar exploration twins should distinguish three levels: visual scenes, mission-level simulation, and physical prediction. Realistic lighting and surface textures do not establish that wheel–soil interaction, thermal environments, or sensor models have been validated. State data sources and applicability limits for every capability.

Terrain and environmental inputs

  • Record terrain scale, coordinates, resolution, and sources. Teaching scenarios may use synthetic terrain, but must identify it as something other than the precise surface of a specific location. Sun direction, occlusion, and time conditions affect visual and sensor inputs and should be included in scenario configurations rather than treated only as artistic adjustments.

Vehicle–ground interaction

  • Choose simplified contact or a more complex soil model according to the task. Friction, sinkage, and slip parameters need supporting evidence and sensitivity checks. Do not apply Earth-test values to lunar predictions without explanation. Visible wheel tracks do not establish that corresponding physical sinkage occurred.

Mission operations and communication constraints

  • Define activities such as driving, observation, and sampling separately from energy, communication, and time constraints. Replay or controlled delays can demonstrate operations, but specify whether delays are configured values or communication data. The operating interface should allow inspection of action history and stop states.

How to structure acceptance by level

  • Visual acceptance checks scene consistency with source materials; functional acceptance checks the task loop; physical acceptance requires comparison with experiments or credible benchmarks. List verified, estimated, and uncovered capabilities separately in the handover, avoiding the use of video quality as a substitute for engineering accuracy documentation.
