How do you synchronize a UAV swarm digital twin and distinguish simulation from physical aircraft?

Last updated: · New Horizon Digital Outsourcing Team

Swarm twins need stable identities, timestamps, and state sources for each uncrewed aircraft, with the interface clearly labeling simulation, playback, or real hardware. Multiple aircraft moving together demonstrate only a scene; this alone does not establish coordinated swarm missions or integrated control of real aircraft.

Standardize identities and coordinates

  • Maintain each object's device ID, model version, coordinate reference, and connection status. Geographic-to-local coordinate conversion requires a fixed origin and altitude definition. Do not assign objects by message arrival order, which can display one device's state on another object during reconnection or concurrent operation.

Synchronization strategies and stale states

  • The display may interpolate to improve continuity, but must preserve raw data and latency metrics. Disconnected objects should appear stale or offline, without unlimited extrapolation. States used for mission analysis and control decisions require independent validity periods and quality checks.

Separate mission and control layers

  • Design task allocation, state monitoring, and low-level control separately. This article addresses public civilian inspection and research scenarios; actual flight also requires on-site approvals and safety conditions. Tasks issued digitally must include target confirmation, access control, and cancellation mechanisms.

Recommended acceptance scenarios

  • Check concurrent objects, packet loss for individual devices, clock offsets, and reconnection. Report object mismatches, latency distributions, and mission-state consistency. Deliver log playback and diagnostic methods so acceptance does not depend on a single demonstration video.
