How Should Model-Driven Documents Be Delivered and Kept Aligned with Engineering Baselines?

Last updated: · New Horizon Digital Outsourcing Team

A model-driven document delivery includes templates, field mappings, model scope, version records, and reproduction instructions, not just the generated report. Engineering evidence must still support its conclusions. Automation reduces repetitive compilation work; it does not prove that a design is correct.

Define the Questions the Document Must Answer

  • Requirements documents focus on statements and traceability; interface documents on connected elements, directions, types, and constraints; review reports on design decisions and evidence. Define the elements and attributes needed for each section rather than exporting an entire model tree indiscriminately.
  • Specify whether the source is the current model, selected packages, or a set of frozen baselines. Record filters and reference versions so that a report does not silently mix data from different project stages.

Make Template Rules Inspectable

  • Map fields for headings, text, figures, tables, and appendices. Define element ordering, duplicate handling, and missing-value behavior. Missing critical fields should produce traceable issues, not generic text that conceals incomplete data.
  • Manage reusable templates separately from project-specific content. After a template change, check long names, empty lists, nested elements, and large tables with a small model sample. Producing a file does not guarantee correct pagination, references, or captions.

Check the Generated Output

  • Sample element counts, key attributes, and traceability references against the source model. Check contents, figure and table numbering, and cross-references. Retain human review of explanations and conclusions, especially where unverified assumptions could be presented as established results.
  • Record model and template versions, generation time, and known limitations with each report. Compare regenerated reports using the same inputs, distinguishing model changes, template changes, and formatting-only changes.

Acceptance and Efficiency Assessment

  • The receiving team should independently generate the agreed report format and locate the model element behind a requirement. Include editable templates, sample configuration, field definitions, dependencies, and operating steps. Confirm commercial tool licensing separately.
  • Compare compilation time, manual edits, and data inconsistencies for the same model size and reporting scope. Account for review effort when assessing automation benefits; generation speed alone is not total delivery efficiency.
