How do you hand over source code for custom outsourced software?

Last updated: · New Horizon Digital Outsourcing Team

Source-code handover for outsourced custom software typically includes the repository baseline within the agreed scope, build and run instructions, environment and version inventories, open-source dependency and license information, and steps to reproduce critical workflows. New Horizon Digital Outsourcing Team supports local deployment by default and does not require cloud hosting. Delivering only an installer without the build method does not complete handover.

Engineering Notes

What supporting information makes a source package maintainable?

01

Lock the build baseline

Record the commit version, dependency lockfiles, compiler, and runtime environment. Hand over the build entry point and steps to reproduce critical workflows. Running on the developer's computer does not mean the receiving environment has passed acceptance.

02

Inventory dependencies and assets separately

In addition to software libraries, record the sources and permitted uses of models, fonts, images, videos, and data. Formats such as SPDX can help express software bills of materials and license information, but cannot replace actual authorization documents.

03

Exclude credentials from delivery

The handover package should exclude personal tokens, production passwords, and unrelated data. Configuration instructions should explain how the client supplies its own credentials. Check interface-access permissions separately during handover.
